Guidelines for independent artists without a distributor:

  1. Contact Recorded Music NZ to obtain an International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) for the waiata + registration within the direct-to-artist scheme to ensure you collect broadcast & public performance royalties as both the artist & owner of your waiata:

  2. Find a digital distributor to manage the delivery of your waiata to digital music platforms i.e. Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon etc. You may already have a relationship with a label/distributor but if not please read the resource provided by the NZ Music Commission HERE before you make your choice.

  3. Once you choose your distributor you will need to supply the master recording, ISRC, cover artwork as well as background information regarding the song, eg songwriters, producers, publisher, etc

  4. Register the reo Māori version of your waiata with APRA AMCOS HERE.

  5. Here are some tips on how to promote your waiata HERE.
